  18. <p>     The gulf crisis makes headlines, but it has also produced
  19. a crop of strange and little noticed war stories:
  20. </p>
  21. <p>     PROPAGANDA MILL. Saddam's flacks are telling radio and TV
  22. audiences that American soldiers "are drinking alcohol, eating
  23. pork and practicing prostitution." A clandestine radio station
  24. claims that 40% of U.S. servicemen are infected with the AIDS
  25. virus.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     WHERE'S THE BEEF? More than 650,000 cans of corned beef were
  28. recalled from Jordanian refugee camps after local health
  29. officials determined that it was "not fit for consumption." One
  30. examiner noted that the product, a gift from the European
  31. Community, was "full of hair."
  32. </p>
  33. <p>     SUIT ENVY. British Aerospace has equipped its gulf-based
  34. employees with state-of-the-art protective gear. A British
  35. expert contends that the lightweight suits, which have a porous
  36. charcoal lining that breathes in the searing desert heat, are
  37. "much better than anything our own soldiers or the Americans
  38. have."
  39. </p>
  40. <p>     BEASTLY FEAST. Hungry Iraqi soldiers have stormed the Kuwait
  41. zoo, killing and eating dozens of gazelles, antelope and other
  42. mammals. The World Society for the Protection of Animals has
  43. reports that some of the zoo's larger predators are roaming the
  44. streets and that a child was killed by a lion.
  45. </p>
  46. <p>     MINISTRY OF MORALS. Women in Saudi Arabia who drive cars or
  47. show too much leg are routinely persecuted by the mutawain, the
  48. country's dreaded "morals police." Now non-Muslim women are
  49. rejoicing at a rumor that a U.S. servicewoman pulled her 9-mm
  50. sidearm on a mutawain zealot who tried to stop her from driving
  51. a military vehicle near the Dhahran air base. The mutawain
  52. officer has reportedly been suspended.
